Getting your association's website found: what is included, what takes time

Getting your association's website found

When an association receives a website quote, the line "SEO included" reassures, and it misleads. It means the website will be readable by Google and by AI engines. It does not mean the association will appear first when someone searches for "free food parcels Schaerbeek" or "free French lessons Liège". This guide separates the two, says what is done once and what is done every month, and gives a plan a small team can hold.

In short

  • Search visibility is not a task: the technical base is done once, visibility is worked on every month
  • Every Kern4Good offer, from 1 200 EUR, includes the base: structure, titles, sitemap, performance, mobile, structured data, llms.txt
  • Real visibility requires a content strategy, pages that answer questions, links from other websites, follow-up, and optimisation for AI engines (GEO)
  • Count a few days a month, on your side or ours: two to four depending on ambition
  • For an association, local queries and your publics' questions are worth more than generic keywords

What "basic SEO" means, and what it does not

Search engine optimisation (SEO) covers everything that helps a website appear in search engine results without paying for advertising. It has two very different halves. The first is technical and done once, when the website is built: it makes the website readable. The second is editorial and done over time: it makes the website worth showing. Google says it in its own guides: ranking rewards helpful, reliable content written for people, not a list of keywords.

A serious agency includes the first half in every website. None can include the second in a build package, because it has no end.

What is included in all our offers

From the launch website at 1 200 EUR, every website of the Kern4Good programme delivers the technical minimum:

  • A clean structure: one page per topic, hierarchical headings, readable addresses
  • The tags: a title and a description per page, written for search
  • A sitemap and a robots.txt file, so engines find every page
  • Performance and mobile display, measured before go-live
  • Structured data (schema.org): the organisation, the pages, the questions and answers, so engines and AI understand who you are
  • An llms.txt file summarising the website for AI assistants
  • Security (HTTPS) and redirects from the old addresses when a website is redone, so nothing acquired is lost

With that, the website is indexed within days and appears on its own name. That is the foundation. The glossary defines SEO.

What makes the difference, and is not in the quote

A content strategy

Which questions do your publics type, with which words, in which municipality? A food aid association is not searched for as "solidarity non-profit" but as "free food parcel" followed by a neighbourhood name. The content strategy consists in listing those questions, deciding which page answers each, and holding that plan for a year.

Regular writing

One page per question, written for the person asking it, updated when the answer changes. News items count less than pages answering a lasting question: "how to register", "who can benefit", "where and when". It is the longest work, and the only one nobody can do for you without you.

Links from other websites

Engines judge a website by those who cite it. For an association, the links that count are those of your municipality, your federation, your partners, the sector directories and the local press: they are accessible, free, and they require asking. The glossary explains the backlink.

Advanced optimisation and follow-up

Looking every month at what Search Console shows (the queries, the pages that rise, those not indexed), correcting, linking pages together, updating titles that do not get clicks. One well-spent hour a month is worth more than a yearly audit.

Optimisation for AI engines (GEO)

More and more people ask their question to an AI assistant rather than a search engine. Those assistants cite the websites that answer clearly, with dated facts, questions and answers and definitions. GEO (generative engine optimisation) consists in writing that way: a short answer at the top of the page, sources, sourced figures, a glossary. The glossary defines GEO.

How much time it takes

It must be said plainly: real visibility requires a few days a month, two to four depending on ambition, whether the association's team provides them or the technical team does. Below that, the website will stay found on its name and on a few queries; above it, results show in three to six months and accumulate. That time is split as follows, as a guide:

  • One day: a new or reworked page, from your publics' questions
  • Half a day: follow-up (Search Console, indexing, corrections, internal links)
  • Half a day: links (requests to the municipality, the federation, partners; directory updates)
  • One to two days, depending on ambition: additional content, translations, optimisation for AI engines

Three ways to organise

  • Your team does it: we train your referent in a half-day at cost (content plan, Search Console, links), they keep the rhythm; it is the cheapest and most lasting option
  • We do it with you: at-cost support, on quote, in monthly day bundles, with a check-in every month
  • You do nothing more: an honest choice for an association known through word of mouth and its partners; the website stays found on its name, and that is already useful

The Pricing page says what is included in each tier; the Digital training page presents the half-day for the referent.

A twelve-month plan for a small association

  1. Month 1: list twenty questions your publics ask, in their words; check which ones already have a page
  2. Months 2 to 4: one page a month for the most frequent questions, with a short answer at the top
  3. Month 3: ask your municipality, your federation and three partners for a link; update your entries in directories
  4. Every month: one hour of Search Console, fix what is not indexed, improve the title of a page that does not get clicks
  5. Month 6: look at the queries that bring you visits; adjust the plan
  6. Month 12: take stock, keep what works, remove the pages nobody reads

What not to do

  • Buying links or "SEO packs": engines detect and penalise them
  • Writing for engines: a page stuffed with keywords answers nobody
  • Publishing news of no lasting interest thinking "it makes content"
  • Expecting a ranking in three weeks: search visibility is judged at six months
  • Forgetting redirects during a redesign: it is the first cause of visibility loss

The guide Redoing your association's website places search visibility in the whole project; the guide AI for associations explains how to write faster without losing your tone.

Is SEO included in the website?

The technical base, yes, in every offer from 1 200 EUR. Visibility on the queries that matter to you requires regular content and link work, which is not in a build package. We say it before the quote, not after.

How much does SEO support cost?

On quote, at cost, in monthly day bundles. The quote states the days, what they cover and what stays on your side. For many associations, training the referent is the best investment.

Do we need to pay for advertising on top?

No, not for a local association. Google does offer a free advertising programme to eligible non-profit organisations (Ad Grants); it requires management time and does not replace content.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No, it extends it. A well-structured website, with clear answers and sources, is well read by engines and by AI assistants. They are the same good practices, plus short answers at the top of the page and dated facts.

How soon do we see results?

Three to six months for the first queries, one year for a stable effect, provided the rhythm is kept. Pages answering a lasting question keep bringing visits years later.
